Other pathways into medicine

There are many opportunities to gain experience in the NHS that do not involve traditional training roles or employment in a health board. Consider these options if you want to gain experience before applying for a training programme or developing your clinical skills.

Medical Training Initiative

The UK Medical Training Initiative (MTI) scheme aims to help improve the quality of healthcare in developing countries. International junior and middle-grade doctors receive specialised medical training for up to 2 years to build their knowledge, skills, and experience.

International medical graduates on the scheme benefit from training in the NHS. Afterwards, they return to their home countries to share new techniques, best practices, and knowledge with colleagues to improve patient care.

Applying for MTI opportunities

To apply for an MTI opportunity in Scotland, you must contact the relevant medical royal college for the specialty you are interested in.

You’ll find more information on MTI opportunities on the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges website. You can also view a list of medical royal colleges that offer the scheme.
