General practitioner

As a general practitioner (GP) in NHSScotland, you’ll have the opportunity to work in a primary care setting in a city, town, or rural environment. Where you work will depend on your experience and what you’re looking for.

What you'll need to work as a GP in Scotland

Since 1 April 2006, all doctors and locums working in general practice in the NHS must be on the GP register. This does not apply to doctors in training.

To work as a GP in the UK, you must apply for registration via the Portfolio pathway to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and experience required. After your application is processed successfully, you’ll receive a Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR) certificate. Once you have your CEGPR, you can be entered on the GP register. You must also have a full General Medical Council licence to practise.
