What is a staff bank?

Our health board staff banks provide an appropriately skilled workforce on demand to cover temporary staff shortages. Having extra staff complements our existing NHS workforce and supports safe, high-quality patient care delivery.

Shift cover is provided 24 hours a day to hospital wards, outpatient clinics, health centres, and in the community. Boards are not obligated to provide regular work. You can always say no when offered a shift.

Staff bank teams recruit workers, assign shifts, and process payments. They also support the learning and development of people just like you who join a staff bank.

Training

NHS staff bank workers must have appropriate training to carry out their roles safely and effectively.

New staff bank workers

As a new staff bank worker, you’ll need to complete statutory and mandatory training, including fire safety.

Depending on your role, training may also include:

  • Induction
  • Data protection
  • Basic life support
  • Manual handling
  • Infection control

Training is delivered via eLeaning modules and in-person courses.

Specific requirements will be confirmed by the staff bank you join. You’ll also need to renew your statutory and mandatory training when required to stay registered with the staff bank.

Is joining an NHS staff bank right for you?

Anyone over the age of 16 can join our staff banks. You don’t need to be an NHS employee. However, you must be eligible to work in the UK and satisfy our recruitment checks.

Some of our existing staff bank colleagues are:

  • registered healthcare professionals who want more variety in their work or to get experience to support their career progression
  • healthcare support workers who want to develop in their role or prepare for nurse training
  • students looking to boost their finances, support their studies and get valuable experience
  • career changers taking their first step towards an NHS career
  • care assistants who bring their knowledge, skills, and experience from the care sector
  • administrative or support services staff who want to enhance their knowledge and experience and supplement their main income
