Scotland has long enriched the field of medicine, both in terms of practice and research, and it has a particularly proud history in the field of Paediatrics.
Paediatric services in Scotland have advanced enormously in the last few years with significant investment in technology and research. In 2015 a brand new Royal Hospital for Children was build, becoming one of the largest paediatric teaching hospitals in the UK and the largest in Scotland, with a second one opening soon. Scotland represents all paediatric medical and surgical subspecialties, while also playing a significant role in the teaching and training of new doctors, nurses, midwives and other health professionals, to ensure that highly trained NHS staff are ready to care for our children.
Within Scotland, the NHS enjoys a distinctly Scottish identity. Many UK and international medical graduates have been drawn to Scotland by the career opportunities presented with working within the National Health Service (NHS). There are few people in Scotland today whose life has not been touched in some way by the NHS, which remains committed to delivering patient-centred care, free at the point of delivery. Through our ambitious Health and Social Care Delivery Plan we are actively designing a service fit for future needs, which is embodied in the triple-aim of Better Health, Better Care and Better Value.
NHS Scotland currently employs a workforce of over 163,000 staff across Acute, Primary Care, Community, and Health and Social Care Partnerships with many of our staff working across our 274 hospitals, which include large teaching centres, district general hospitals and smaller community based hospitals. Approximately £14.7 billion (GBP) is spent on health and social care annually.
Serving a population of 5.3 million, equitable access to robust quality and timely Paediatric services is vital for clinicians involved in both emergency and routine care to ensure optimal outcomes for their patients.
Working in Scotland’s NHS can be a very rewarding experience for Paediatricians in terms of developing professional practice and sub-specialty interests. The demand for Paediatric services across Scotland is increasing year-on-year and we now have a number of opportunities for Consultants and Specialty Doctors to join our Paediatric teams in many parts of Scotland.
We will shortly be seeking to recruit passionate, motivated and highly skilled Consultant Paediatricians and Paediatric Specialty Doctors for vacancies in a number of attractive geographical locations throughout Scotland. Applications from UK, EEA and non-EEA candidates will be welcomed.
We can also offer opportunities to pursue academic and clinical teaching interests due to the close links with the five medical schools in Scotland: St Andrews, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow.

Salaries for Consultant Paediatricians in Scotland start from £80,653 (GBP) to £107,170 (GBP); whilst salaries for Specialty Doctors in Scotland start from £39,846 (GBP) to £79,304 (GBP), based on a 40 hour contract. Additional payments can be achieved for extra sessions and on-call commitments. Other benefits include up to 41 days holiday per year, a contributory pension scheme and a generous relocation package to support your transition to Scotland, this includes expert guidance on the process of obtaining General Medical Council (GMC) registration and a UK immigration visa, if required.
To work as a doctor in Scotland, you must have valid GMC (General Medical Council) Registration with a Licence to Practice (known as ‘Full registration’). To work as a substantive consultant in Scotland, you must have Full Registration and be included on the GMC Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.

To work as a doctor within the United Kingdom, you must have GMC registration with a Licence to Practice. To work as a consultant within the United Kingdom, you must have GMC registration with a Licence to Practice AND be listed on the GMC Specialist Register. There are no alternative methods to work as a doctor (or a consultant) in the UK.
You can register with the GMC if you hold one of the postgraduate qualifications listed below:
- Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health
- Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics - General Pediatrics
- FCPS Paediatrics - College of Physicians and Surgeons in Pakistan
- Master of Medicine (Paediatrics) - National University of Singapore
- Doctor of Medicine or MD (Paediatrics) - University of Colombo, Sri Lanka
- Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (Paediatrics)
If you are from a country outside of the UK, European Economic area or Switzerland and you do not hold any of the postgraduate qualifications above, you will likely need to take a Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board test to join the register.
