How a career in the NHS is helping Amy put her skills to good use

Amy's story

I decided to do a Business Administration Modern Apprenticeship because I always enjoyed administration in school, and I wanted to put my skills to good use.

My careers teacher advised me of an opportunity within the NHS, and I thought it was a great idea to pop along to the open day to find out about the positions available.

How did you get started in the NHS?

I started my apprenticeship in July 2017, and I worked towards my SVQ Level 2 on the job. My apprenticeship lasted for a year. After I completed it, I worked in different teams at NHS National Services Scotland. I now work in the HR department as a people, systems, and performance administrator.

Describe a typical day for you.

Some days are busier than others, depending on priorities. For me, a typical day is having regular team meetings with my colleagues, running reports, and setting up new accounts for any new starts joining the NHS.

What's the best part of your day?

The best part about my day is the sense of achievement I get when supporting colleagues and building relationships with staff at the other Health Boards.

I'm proud to work for the NHS, as I love assisting others, and I know the work that I do for the NHS is appreciated.

What are the most important skills for an administrator?

Being able to prioritise my workload is essential. Having good organisational and communication skills when meeting with people in person or when meeting online using Microsoft Teams, sending emails, and speaking on the telephone is also important. I also need to have a good working knowledge of Microsoft packages, such as Word and Excel.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about a career in the NHS?

The advice I can give for somebody looking to start a career in the NHS is to do your research on the NHSScotland Careers website. Find out which careers are best suited for you.

A Modern Apprenticeship is a great opportunity to get started in the NHS. You're getting the training you need and working towards your qualification.
