My name is Rachel Mulcahy. I am the lead Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Dietitian for Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
My job involves supporting patients and their parents or carers with their nutrition throughout their cancer journey.
On a day to day basis, the skills I use are communication skills and empathy. I also really need to have a good head for mathematics and calculations, as well as bringing in the obvious skills such as a good knowledge of food, nutrition supplement drinks, and special nutritional products we can give to children down feeding tubes.
The part of my job that I enjoy the most is working with the children. Due to the duration of their treatment, we get to know the parents and their families really well.
Seeing them progress, knowing that I've helped gives me great satisfaction to know that I have made a difference.
