Isabel - Commis Chef, Golden Jubilee National Hospital

Isabel is a Commis Chef working at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital.

Through her hard work, dedication, and support from everyone in the kitchen team, Isabel completed her Modern Apprenticeship and has now secured a full-time job at the hospital.

Watch the video below to find out why Isabel decided to do the Modern Apprenticeship programme and how it's made a positive impact on her life.

I'm Isabel Anderson and I was an Apprentice at the Golden Jubilee Hospital.

I got the opportunity to come here and do work experience, which I really enjoyed. When I saw there was an apprenticeship advertised, I thought I'd just go for it.

We had a vacancy within the kitchen department and after initial discussions with [our] HR department, we decided that the best course would be to take on a Modern Apprentice.

We really didn't know what to expect, because we didn't know what candidates we were going to have. We didn't know what experience they might have or they might not have. We did hope that we could have somebody that was a completely blank canvas that we could nurture, so we could take on board a full-time vacancy for them.

My apprenticeship started by meeting up with my assessor first, to see the modules and the paperwork.

[To make] the selection for the SVQ units, we met with the Lecturer from the college and we sat down and discussed each individual element of the whole Modern Apprenticeship, to see what were the most suitable modules for our business.

The assessments were [both] written and practical. The written one was more difficult for me, but I had a lot of support off the team members in the kitchen.

I was really proudĀ of every single one of the team. I think they thought of Isabel as their wee sister. [They] really took to her, wholeheartedly supported her, mentored her in every aspect, especially the bits she was struggling with or found more challenging. They really helped her, every single one of them.

My Modern Apprenticeship helped me become more confident and when I passed my Modern Apprenticeship, I was so happy and proud. My friends and family, they were also proud as well.

For somebody to take on a Modern Apprentice, I would say you have to put the effort in. You have to have a good team around you for support for the Apprentice.

I think it's a wonderful opportunity to help them and guide them through the first stages of their career.

I definitely think we selected the right person because she's taken on board everything that her mentors have said to her. She's embraced the challenge and she's come out the other side as a different person.

Isabel has been an absolutely wonderful student. [When] she eventually really got into it, she put the effort in. Her time management was absolutely fantastic.

She made time from her day to day duties to go and sit down and go through her theory work. She put everything into her practical work. I saw a lot of myself in her when I was that age!

My plan for the future is to keep working here, and hopefully get a promotion.

I would definitely recommend [it to] young people who want to go on apprenticeships because I've got a full-time job out of it and you don't know where the future will lead.
